Studies on Bark Grafting for Top Working Renewal of Apple Trees (Malus domestica)

Abstract
The effects of grafting date, cultivar of scion, scion length, scion part, storage condition of scion, scion diameter, grafting place, age of branch on the survival percent, growth and development of scion were studied in bark-grafting for top working renewal of apple trees(Malus domestica)
The results obtained are as follows
1. May 10 and 25 were. the most appropriate grafting dates.
2. The scion cultivars of Mollies Delicious and Fuji flowered in the same year but not that of Tsugaru. Mollies Delicious fruits set on the scion had good marketable qualities.
3. 0.8¡1.2§¯ of diameter scion seemed to be best. Scion taken from middle part showed the most shoot growth, flowering and 20§¯ long scion had most shoot number.
4. Scions stored in the ground were not usable up to June 10. Best storage method of scion was to keep it in a 5¡É refrigerator. .
5. Callus bridge was connected at 30 days after grafting. Vascular strand was connected between callus and a new complete connecting tissue was formed between scion and stock at 80 days after grafting.
6. Bark-grafting for top renewal of apple trees seem to be possible to every part of branch in May.
